Brighton Photo Fringe 2010

October 4, 2010

There are a wealth of shows in Brighton at the minute- and we have hardly had time to talk about any of them yet- so here is a little heads up for some things that caught our eye in the Brighton Photo Fringe. This first post is all about former students of Garage Studios exhibiting work.

First up is Flash Fiction at The Lord Nelson, 36 Trafalgar St, Brighton. The work shown is all by 8 photographers that met on our Creative Photography Course- after the 8 week course finished they decided to carry on meeting every Thurs night to continue with projects, critique and advise each other. The show includes a incredibly moving study by Maria Gibbs, who floored the class when she first showed initial images from this project.

Next up is Masks by Erika Szostak exhibiting at Colourstream, 123 St. James St. Erika started her studies on gender and role, after discussing her photographs of performers with Kevin, whilst she too was on the Creative Photography Course. The image “Trapped” from the series shot as part of the Creative Course, was recently selected as one of the winners of the European Women’s Lobby “My World: Visions of 21st-Century Feminism” Award.

Next up two former Studio Lighting course students. Sarah Bird and Adam Bronkhorst are exhibiting at Add the Colour We have dedicated sponsored Studio time to Sarah and watched her work really develop. Adam meanwhile was a Strobist fan when he first attended Kevin’s Studio Lighting Course over 2 years ago, he then started to assist Kevin and Matt on Fashion shoots, and with their help gained an excellent knowledge of Professional Lighting and has since gone into business as a professional Wedding photographer. The show is entitled 4Tography- as it also features the work of Danny Carlyle and Helen McDonald. 17 Oct- 23 Oct. at Add the Colour

Next up we have Claire Griffiths and Tina Jenner, who we blogged about some time ago as we assisted Tina, an artist with learning difficulties, conduct several Studio shoots, with Inclusive Arts Practitioner and Photographer Claire Griffiths.

Their Project Popular Camera which used photography and text to create personal alphabets representing memories and important people in their lives is exhibited at Iydea from 2nd Oct- 14th Nov.

We will try and cover more of the great exhibitions in Brighton this week, but we are immensely proud of what our former students have gone on to achieve and wanted to highlight these ones to you first. Are you a former student and we have missed you, drop us a line and let us know.

Thanks, Kev.
