Portraiture

For those of you that want to improve your photography skills our new course will teach everything you need to know about capturing an arresting portrait, from studio lighting to the fundamental principles of capturing that perfect moment.

The areas of tuition will include:

  • Looking at the work of key photographers
  • Studio Lighting
  • The key principles of Portraiture
  • Exploring Style

The course is open to all abilities, as well as to both film and digital users, with the central concept focusing on exploring and developing your own portrait style so that you can make your mark on all the photos you take. It will start by looking at the work of key portrait photographers such as Richard Avedon and Nadav Kander and the techniques they use to stamp their personality on their photos. You will be taught the typical studio lighting techniques used in portrait photography as well as how to engage with and get the best out of your subject. Each session will be split into a single image review, brief talk on a photographers work, and then a guided shooting session.

As the course progresses we will critique your work and encourage you to continue shooting in the week between each course session.

All models and studio equipment will be provided so all you will need is your own camera(s) and it will be taught with our usual hands-on approach so that you have a complete understanding of your style and camera to get a personal image that conveys personality. You will be taught by professional photographer Kevin Mason, formerly known as DarkDaze, who has been working on portraiture for years with clients across the the creative and magazine industries. Natasha Alipour-Faridani who has worked on headshots, promo images, band promos and is Kevin’s Assistant.
