PX100 Silver Shade/First Flush integral film test.

April 5, 2010

After a huge amount of waiting, and a lot of expectation I finally have my hands on a pack of the new film from Impossible Project, the PX100 Silver Shade designed for Polaroid SX-70 cameras. I have my regular model Georgie Hobday coming down today and we are going to do a little test of the film, which I will post the results off tomorrow.

I have read a fair amount about the reliability of this film, or not as it seems at the minute. I have shot Polaroids for years now, mainly in available light, and most of the time they tend to be portraits, so I will use the same ‘rules’ to test this film. I haven’t ever shot the manipulable film, Time Zero etc so these arent qualities I will really be looking at I am more interested in how the film reproduces what I frame, and how responsive the film is to other factors, and will this affect the longevity of the image. I only have the one pack so it will be interesting to see what results I get from the 8 shots that my £19.99 got me. On a side note when I bought the film from the Photographers Gallery, London, the sales guy in the bookshop was very keen to stress that they considered it an experimental film, and did his best to dissuade me from parting with the cash, so customer service isn’t completely dead. They are encouraging customers to bring in their shots as well so they can make some kind of assessment of the product itself. The biggest thing that concerns me about this instant film is one of the guidelines on the Impossible Site,

CHECK LIGHT SHIELDING

Make sure that you IMMEDIATELY shield the picture as it comes out of the camera by covering it with your hand and putting it in a pocket or turning it upside down.

So hopefully in a few hours I will know whether this was a case of the Emperors New Clothes, or does this new film capture my attention and demand that I experiment with it…. I am excited to find out, so check back soon. Oh and if you have results too then please let us know. Kev

Looking forward to this… Maybe just as a signpost to future glory, but still.
