Fashion Editorial Course- Learn how to shoot for magazines

At Garage Studios we like to think we can teach some pretty varied courses- and this one is probably our most advanced and demanding but exciting courses, Fashion Editorial.

Shoot by Kevin Mason this week for GangUp issue 2. Concept and Styled by Emma SandhamKing

Shoot by Kevin Mason this week for GangUp issue 2. Concept and Styled by Emma SandhamKing

In the space of two intensive days of training we can start you on the road to shooting Fashion Editorial for submission to magazines, websites and commercial clients. This course is run by Kevin Mason, and his assistant Natasha Alipour-Faridani, and professional Stylists Stevi Jelbart and Emma SandhamKing, alongside a professional Hair/MakeUp artist. Together Stevi, Kevin and Emma have founded GangUp magazine a bespoke fashion photography publication, and they have been published in numerous magazines.

The previous two students on this course shot this work on the links below…

Day One
Day Two

We provide experienced, published models and work through all the knowledge required to shoot a full editorial story, and complete assistance from our full team- that will leave you confident at tackling a 8-10 page editorial with narrative.

You will need good lighting skills, and confidence in your composition and general camera work and a basic understanding of styles/types of fashion photography would be an advantage. We can only take a maximum of 3 people on this course- to ensure everyone gets the attention they need.

We are so confident in the strength of this course and how much it will improve your photography especially with such dedicate 1:1 training. Please view the links for further details and dont hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Fashion Editorial course- Part 3

So here is the final update from this weekends Fashion Editorial course for today. This was shot by Danny Kolasinski again, and is his first editorial of the second day. We really like to stretch photographers on this course, and get them to really push their ideas, and Danny produced a fantastic selection of shots that we could have easily edited into four or more different stories.

Once again, this is my pick, (kevin) of his shots, and he may have another edit up soon, but this is again just to show you the breadth of the course, and what you can get out of it if you apply yourself and work well with the team. As in the previous shoots posted we worked hard with the photographer to try and bring their vision to the shots- and you can hopefully see a massive leap in confidence from Day1, as both students really embraced their own style.

The model- once again- Sally Reynolds.
Styling- Stevi Jelbart- again the brief was to keep outfit changes fairly minimal in this set.
Make-Up- Ciara McCarthy.
Lighting and Set work by Kevin Mason and Natasha Alipour-Faridani.

To book on this course please go here. Tommorrow as well as further shoots (there are 3 more to come) we will be producing a CheckList of How to shoot a Great Editorial.

So here come the shots,

Fashion Editorial Course part2.

Here is the second part of the first day shooting the Fashion Editorial Course this weekend at Garage Studios.

Yesterday we looked at the first editorial from Danny Kolasinski, and now we have the first edit from the second student, Steve Bishopp Both students were new to shooting a full editorial, and this is Steve’s first shoot of the weekend.

The previous night Matt- Art Director/Set Design and Kevin, course tutor, came up with a very simple set element- two large white rectangular boxes that could work to ‘break up’ the studio space and allow the model to move in and around the set. We started with something very simple as we find a lot of photographers fear the ‘big white space’ when they first start studio shooting, so these two simple elements allowed an immediate focal point and they are easily moved, stacked etc. If you want to use these boxes when you hire the studio just let us know. We didnt want to overwhelm the photographer with props or sets at this point, as we needed the focus to be on strong simple photography.

Again with the lighting on this, Kevin and Natasha discussed the general look with Steve and then set up a easy to use scheme. So once again, this is our edit of the students work, each photographer may have a different take on our choices- but we feel that as part of the exercise these images form an simple, effective studio editorial.

The styling in this shoot was by Emma Sandham-King, as with the first shoot posted yesterday we didnt run through big outfit changes in the first set, so the photographers were still comfortable shooting. The model again is the brilliantly versatile Sally Reynolds, with make-up by Ciara McCarthy. Hopefully you can see how quickly each photographer was able to create a different movement and feel to the shoot through use of lighting, and working through the set.

Fashion Editorial Course Day 1.

Welcome to the first post from the Fashion Editorial Course that we completed this weekend at Garage Studios. Booking details here.

The course was constructed and run by Kevin Mason, one of our in-house photographers, who has a lot of experience shooting Fashion Editorial. The benefit of doing a course like this is we get to draw on the advice and ideas of a whole team of people, so the students get a very well rounded view of shooting editorials, as well as the invaluable experience of shooting with a team, working to a brief, and preparing an edit. We provide all lighting equipment, props, set, as well as an excellent, experienced model, Stylists, Make-Up artist, and 3 hands on photography tutors to help and offer advice.

Our two stylists for the weekend where Stevi Jelbart and Emma Sandham-King, who collectively work as Ophelia Fancy, but who also work as freelance stylists for numerous high-profile clients, as well as being the stylists behind GangUp Magazine. On day one of the course they worked to a brief agreed upon by Kevin, and then were each assigned to one of the students, who then received help and advice on how to style their first shoot, as well as giving some handy tips on movement in the clothes, whether the shoot should be static or fluid etc.

Kevin and his regular assistant, Natasha Alipour-Faridani, the fourth in-house photographer, then discussed possible lighting set-ups with each student, which was dictated by the style of the shoot, the fabrics, and the set. Encouraging the photographer to focus on the complete image, and how it ties into a story enabled us to help the students produce really high-quality work, and more importantly work that took their own style as a starting point.

As well as styling the students discussed a Make-Up brief with Ciara McCarthy, who has worked with us on many shoots, and has an enviable client list, so although the first two shoots of the day utilise the same set, they have a very different feel in terms of lighting, make-up, styling. The course teaches how to think fast and get as much out of each set.

The course also teaches interaction with the model, working on posing, as well as ’selling the story’. We are looking for models for this course, so if you are versatile, hard working and enthusiastic then please get in touch with us. EDIT: apologies but I forgot to put that the model here is the brilliant Sally Reynolds, who over the course of the weekend shot a total of 6 great editorials. She has experience of all our studio lighting courses and has been published many times.

So below we have the first of two shoots, on day one of the 2 part course. Neither student had shot a full editorial before so we went with a very simple set and brief for the first half of the day. The images havent been retouched, with the exception of some colour/contrast/levels etc, and are just to be used as illustrative of the work that was produced. Each photographer may produce a different edit, but we have tried to work on a story with them during the course, and have gone with our personal choices here.

The first shoot is by Danny Kolasinski
